Parrikar meets martyr Singh’s family
Lucknow: Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday met the family of Anmol Pratap Singh who was among four troopers killed in an avalanche last week in Chang La pass in Ladakh.The family in Kanpur urged Parrikar to expedite employment for the widow of the slain soldier. It also asked the minister to get Singh’s younger brother, also a defence personnel, transferred to Kanpur.His father Shiv Pratap Singh said he did not get any categorical assurance, but added that the family was hopeful the government would look after them. 2,000 held for impersonation during Bihar police exam
Patna: Around 2,000 men were arrested in Bihar for impersonation during the constable recruitment exam, police said on Wednesday.Officials said the number of arrests made in the last three weeks are the highest for one exam in the state so far. The men were held for impersonating candidates during checking of documents.Last year, the state government initiated the process for recruitment of 11,783 constables and written exams were held. Around 52,000 candidates were called for screening of documents at the Patliputra Sports Complex here.A preliminary investigation found that the impersonators were hired by the aspirants for taking the physical test. All those arrested were presented in court and sent to jail, said Anand Prakash, an official of the police recruitment board.It was also found that 150 women were unfit for recruitment as they were pregnant, police said on Wednesday.”A pregnancy test was conducted for all the women aspirants and a number tested positive. Now, such women have to wait till the next round of recruitment for police constable in the state,” said Prakash.Screening of documents for 16,600 women began last week.”We had applied for the post last year in April-May and it took nearly a year to invite us for screening of documents for a physical test. In this period, several women aspirants were married and got pregnant, and that cost them their life time opportunity,” said Nirmala Devi, who was declared unfit for physical test after being found to be pregnant.In 2014, around 150 people were arrested for impersonation during the statewide written examination for the recruitment of police constables. 3 die after eating food at wedding
Sambalpur: At least three children died and 20 others were taken ill after eating food at a wedding feast at Bhulki village on Wednesday. Though the children had consumed food on Monday night, they died this morning, police officials said. The 20 other affected persons were admitted to a nearby government hospital. The deceased have been identified as Birsa Purti (7), Sunita Purti (3) and Manika Munda (11). A three-member team of doctors has rushed to the village to treat other villagers who fell ill after consuming the poisonous food, Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO), Sambalpur, Panchanan Nayak said. Woman scribe molested, robbed of mobile phone in local train
Mumbai: A woman journalist was allegedly molested and robbed of her mobile phone by an unidentified man in the ladies’ compartment of a local train at Kalwa railway station in the wee hours of Wednesday, police said. The incident occurred at around 1.30 AM when the woman, working as a reporter with a Hindi daily, was heading to her Dombivali home in neighbouring Thane district after winding up her work in Mumbai, railway police said. She was travelling in the Karjat-bound suburban train when the robber, aged around 30, suddenly got into the ladies’ compartment at Kalwa railway station. As soon as the train started moving, he tried to overpower her in a bid to snatch her phone, police said. When she resisted his move, the miscreant tried to pull her out of the train following which the woman surrendered her phone, worth around Rs 41,000, to prevent any untoward incident. After threatening the victim with dire consequences, the attacker jumped from the slow moving train on to the platform and fled, police said quoting the victim’s complaint. The shocked victim subsequently went home and approached the Thane railway police this morning. An FIR has been registered on charges of molestation, criminal intimidation and robbery and a manhunt has been launched to nab the culprit, Thane Government Railway Police Inspector Anant Rane said. “We have registered an FIR and will examine the CCTV footage to identify the accused. We are also preparing the suspect’s sketch based on the description given by the complainant,” Rane said. A delegation of journalists was also present at the police station to express their solidarity. (PTI)
