SHILLONG: Gangs of car lifters are active in the city and this is proved by the reported disappearance of as many as 26 vehicles from Shillong in the last three years.
According to SP City Vivek Syiem, most of the cars stolen from the city are smuggled to Dimapur and Mizoram
While seven vehicles were stolen from the city in 2013, the number shot up to 13 in 2014 and as many as six vehicles have already been lifted this year.
Recently, police busted a gang involved in the stealing of a Bolero pick up (ML 05 0035) from near Woodland Hospital.
In this connection, one Chandra Prakash Sharma of Sweeper Lane, Mawlonghat was apprehended and his interrogation led to the arrest of one Musahid Ali from Guwahati.
Syiem informed that the vehicle was recovered from the house of one Ridalin Lamare at Nongjri Raid Mawbah, Umsning. It was kept there at the insistence of one Margaret Lamare who has also been arrested.
On Wednesday, more arrests were made in this connection with the Special Cell, Shillong apprehending Raju Biswa,  Amar Deb Burman and  Shubash Dorjee, all hailing from Shillong.
According to Syiem, Raju Biswa and Chandra Pr Sharma are history-sheeters and are involved in several cases of murder, kidnapping and dacoity.
