Editor,
I am not one to believe in coincidences, especially when it concerns politicians or the State Government. The Sub- Divisional Officer (Civil) of Sohra Sub-Division, Ghanshyam Dass’s transfer falls into this category of strange (but convenient) coincidences. The Govt has glibly tried to explain away the timing of the officer’s transfer as a mere coincidence, stating the matter had already been in the pipeline, much before the politicians and the bureaucratic circles of Meghalaya hastened it. The ‘heroic’ admission by Donkupar Roy destroys the Govt’s lie. The UDP chief claimed to have personally spoken to the Chief Secretary demanding Ghanshyam Dass’s removal. This shows up both Donkupar Roy and the Chief Secretary in extremely poor light. One struggles to understand why the Govt. is so quick to sacrifice honest officers at the altar of third-rate politicians. The Chief Secretary appears to have lost his spine already in a short time on the job. Hence the silly lie about strange coincidences. Save it for the birds, Mr Chief Secretary. You do not deserve the loyalty and dedication of honest officers!

Misleading or misled
Editor,
The sudden arrest order by the Meghalaya High Court against the Headman of Wahkhen was met with protests, disillusionment and murmurs. Funny as it seems, some politicians went to ‘pay respects’ and a section of vernacular newspaper seems to highlight the issue as ‘communally linked’ by portraying the contemnor as a ‘ helpless victim’. However, the other side of the story remains ignorant to many politicians and so called pressure groups. The very contemnor was equally involved in denying due right of PDS to some beneficiaries in his village which was revealed by Agnes Kharshiing of the CSWO. We seem to become emotionally charged up without thinking with our brains and doing proper homework whether such cases deserve public sympathy or just mere publicity.

Can we please help Nepal
Editor,
Apropos the article by Paramjit Bakhshi ‘H..E..L..P’(ST April 30, 2015), trying to draw the attention of Shillongites towards the Nepal earthquake of 25 April, 2015, has compelled me to give vent to my feelings, too. His write up have evoked emotions about the Nepalese people especially those living in Meghalaya and recognizing their contributions towards the building of this state. At this point of time, irrespective of ethnicities we should all be standing in solidarity with the earthquake struck people of Nepal. The continuous telecast in almost all channels telling us the degree of disaster and deaths now having crossed 5000) will definitely touch the chord of humanity in each one of us to contribute generously for the rebuilding of lives in Nepal. Much has been discussed over social media but we need to get into action. Many of my friends irrespective of their communities are keen to contribute to the relief fund. I advised them to make their contributions through the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund to ensure that money reaches the deserving.By triggering this issue by the esteemed writer has kindled in all a sense of humanity. I am hopeful we will all stand in solidarity at this hour of crises in Nepal.

Ignorant ATM Card holders!
Editor,
One evening as I was withdrawing money from one of the State Bank of India’s ATM at Umsning, District Ri Bhoi, suddenly, a man who was standing behind me entered along. I told him to wait for his turn but he politely requested me to help him in withdrawing money from his account since he’s not familiar with the procedure. The most shocking thing for me was that he even told me his password. I know for certain that it was not his fault. He was ignorant about the use of an ATM card. In this case it is the banking authorities that should be blamed for not giving proper instructions to their clients especially those from the rural areas and the aged. This incident made me realize that it’s easy for people with wrong intentions to misuse the other person’s account. This has happened quite often here in Shillong, where money is wrongly withdrawn by fraudsters from other people’s accounts. With the emergence of new technology people have to adapt and move with the times. It is incumbent upon all banks to teach their customers on the right method of using an ATM card so that their accounts are safeguarded.
