16 police personnel injured
Muzaffarnagar: One man and sixteen police personnel were injured on Saturday during a protest held by members of Tablighi Jamaat community at a police station in Shamli district, police said. They were protesting against the beating of a five-member team of their community on Friday by some youths in Delhi-Kandhla train, police said. The protesters gheraoed the police station and pelted stones besides setting some vehicles on fire, SP Vijay Bhushan said. To disperse the violent protesters, police used tear gas shells and cane charged them, Bhushan said. In the cane charging one person was injured. Security has been tightened and extra police force has been deployed in the town, he said. Five persons belonging to the Tablighi Jamaat community were beaten up last evening. The traffic on Saharanpur-Delhi highway was disrupted following the incident, they said. The senior police officers rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters assuring them of nabbing the absconding accused soon, they added. (PTI)
Over 200 sheep die after consuming rotten grain
Mathura: Two hundred and twenty-five sheep coming from Rajasthan have been killed in village Mudseras after consuming rotten grain from hailstorm-hit fields, a medical officer said on Saturday. “73 sheep in serious condition, were saved by a team of doctors sent to the affected area, however 225 sheep died yesterday due to rumen acidosis (a metabolic disease of cattle) before the team arrived in the village,” Dr. S.K. Mullick, Chief veterinary officer said. He has advised the farmers not to gaze cattle in rain hit area where fodder and grain has been hit by fungus due to incessant rain. “Before giving the hay to cattle, the farmers should first dry it up and then wash it,” he added. Hundreds of sheep from border Rajasthan village Pali came on Thursday for grazing to village Mudseras, a village hit by untimely incessant rain. For further preventive action, a team of doctors is camping in the village, he concluded. (PTI)
Armyman booked for raping
Nashik: A senior Army officer has been booked for allegedly raping a mentally challenged woman, police said on Saturday. Colonel Vinod Sahani has been booked for allegedly raping the 21-year-old mentally retarded woman on April 30, who stayed in his neighbourhood, Devlali Camp police station assistant sub-inspector Atul Zende said. According to complaint filed by the girl’s family, the senior army officer lured the girl to his house and later raped her, the officer said, adding, the victim’s parents lodged the complaint on Friday. An FIR has been registered against the officer but he has not been arrested yet. The accused and the victim were sent to Nashik civil hospital for medical examination and further investigations were underway, police added. (PTI)
Minor reshuffle in Odisha administration
Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Saturday effected a minor administrative reshuffle after giving its nod to five IAS officers to apply for central deputation. The officers who are allowed to apply for central deputation are N K Sundaray, Parag Gupta, Arabind Padhee, Usha Padhee and S Aswathy. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved applications of the five officers on Saturday, CMO officials said. As per the reshuffle, 2001 batch officer Bishnu Prasad Sahoo is posted as the new Director of Technical Education and Training while 2003 batch officer Manorajan Patnaik is posted as the additional IG, prisons. Anil Kumar Samal is appointed as the new director of tourism. He is also holding the post of Managing Director Odisha Tourism Development Corporation. Bishnu Prasad Prusty is appointed as the Managing Director of Markfed. (PTI)
Woman commits suicide with children; Husband follows
Jaipur: A 24-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well along with her two minor children in Barmer, following which the husband also ended his life, police said on Saturday. Chunni Devi had a verbal spat with her husband on Thursday following which she jumped into the well along with her 18-month-old son Lalit and 6-month-old daughter Gayatri, they said. She took this extreme step when her husband and in-laws had gone to attend a wedding nearby, SHO Chohatan police station Saang Singh said. When the woman’s husband Anil returned, he did not find them in the house and followed their footmarks leading to the well. After spotting the bodies inside the well, Anil jumped into it and died, he said. (PTI)
