Bopanna is now country’s number one doubles player
New Delhi: India’s Rohan Bopanna gained three places to be world number 21, following his stupendous title win at the Madrid Open with Romanian partner Florin Mergea. Bopanna gained 1000 points for his efforts and is now country’s top ranked player in the ATP doubles chart. Leander Paes lost a place to be at number 24. Bopanna and Paes are the only players from India in doubles top-100. Bopanna was ranked number three in the world in July 2013 when he partnered Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-haq Qureshi. In the singes, Somdev Devvarman continues to be top singles player at number 173 but he is now closely followed by Yuki Bhambri, who gained six places to be placed at 180. Yuki had reached the singles quarterfinals at the Karshi Challenger event. Saketh Myneni, who has played in Indian Davis Cup team, is next best at number 229 after going up the ladder by 10 places. In the WTA charts, Sania Mirza maintained her world number one rank in the individual doubles chart.(PTI)
Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are at same level: Maradona
Munich: Argentine football legend Diego Maradona said the debate over which player is better out of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is flawed as the pair are equally matched. The two best players in world football have again showcased their talismanic qualities this season with Messi netting 53 goals in all competitions for Barcelona and Ronaldo scoring one more for Real Madrid. “It’s not the case that Messi is better than Ronaldo or Ronaldo is better than Messi. They are at the same level,” Maradona was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on Monday. As a result both players are often compared but Maradona says the argument is futile, but did point to the Portugal international’s greater threat from outside the box. “Cristiano is a predator in front of goal. You can’t let Cristiano shoot from anywhere in the opposition half. Goalkeepers are scared of him. You have to be honest, goalkeepers are scared of Cristiano. They are not so scared of Messi in those areas because he doesn’t have the same power as Cristiano,” the 54-year-old said. “Cristiano is an incredible professional. At this present time he is right up there at Messi’s level.” (IANS)
Ajax striker made to work as parking attendant
Amsterdam: In one of the weirdest punishment in football history, Ajax Amsterdam striker Richairo Zivkovic has been made to work in the club’s training ground car park as a parking attendant. The Dutch striker has been punished for repeatedly turning up late for training, mirror.co.uk reported on Sunday. “He has indeed been working as parking attendant because he was late again,” confirmed his agent Sjaak Swart. “He’s learned from it. I think the punishment came directly from coach Frank de Boer.” Zivkovic joined Ajax last summer from Groningen for 3 million euros but has not played much in this campaign with just nine substitute appearances and one goal.
