Man objects to eve teasing; assaulted by mob

Muzaffarnagar:  Around 20 people have been booked for allegedly assaulting a shopkeeper and ransacking shops at Jhinjhana area in Shamli district, when he resisted eve teasing of a girl, police said on Wednesday. A case has been registered against 20 people for creating ruckus at Jhinjhana town in neighbouring Shamli district on Tuesday, Additional Superintendent of Police, V K Mishra said. The trio of Danish, Wakar and Nofil misbehaved with a girl who had come to buy goods at the victim’s shop, he said, adding that the shopkeeper objected to the trio’s behaviour following which he was thrashed by them. The trio was later joined by several others in assaulting the victim and ransacked many shops in the area, police said. Mishra said that the situation was brought under control by the police. Additional forces, including Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been deployed in the area after the incident, he said. Steps are being taken to arrest the absconding trio, police added.  (PTI)

Man opens fire, robs techie at ATM

Hyderabad: An unidentified person opened fire at a young woman inside an ATM and robbed her of money and jewellery on Wednesday, police said. The incident occurred at the State Bank ATM in Yousufguda area around 7.30 a.m. when Sreelatha, a software engineer, was withdrawing money. The armed man, who was wearing a mask, entered the ATM behind her and asked her to hand over the cash she had and the ornaments she was wearing. When she refused, he opened fire. A terrified Sreelatha then surrendered the money, gold chain, ear studs and rings to the robber, who also snatched her mobile phone and ATM card. He forced her to reveal the PIN number.After the crime, the man escaped from the ATM, which had no security guard.The techie, who hails from Vijayanagaram district in Andhra Pradesh and was living in a working women’s hostel, told police that the robber, aged around 22-25 years, spoke in Telugu.A police official said the attacker fired a single round and the bullet pierced through the wall adjacent to the ATM machine.Deputy Commissioner of Police K. Venkateswar Rao said a country-made weapon was used in the crime.Police said they were scanning the images from CCTV cameras in and around the ATM. (IANS)

Farmer commits suicide in Bihar

Patna: A 50-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by taking some poisonous substance along with his wife due to financial distress at Chachaul in Patna district, police said on Wednesday. The farmer couple ate some poisonous substance last night after which they were taken to a hospital where the man was declared brought dead, while his wife is still battling for life, Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) Danapur Rahul Kumar said. The relatives of the couple told visiting mediapersons that the couple were in financial distress due to agrarian problem. Senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi, who paid a visit to Chechaul village to meet the couple’s family members, said that the farmer was in great distress as he was burdened with debts and there was no buyer to his wheat crop. Sacks of wheat crop were lying at the house of the couple, he said. PTI)

Doctor beaten to death in UP

Meerut: A 46-year-old doctor was allegedly beaten to death at his house by unknown miscreants in Shastri Nagar area, police said on Wednesday. Ashok Singhal, a physician was found dead at his residence in Shastri Nagar of Nauchandi locality on Wednesday with injury marks, seemingly from a heavy weapon, on the head, SP (City) Omprakash said. The deceased’s family has alleged that Singhal was assaulted by miscreants for resisting a loot attempt, who entered their house and stole money, he said. However, police are probing the involvement of someone close to the victim as his mobile phone and other possessions were found to be safe. Besides, only one of the many almirahs of the victim’s room was found open, police said. The body has been sent for post-mortem and a case has been registered in the incident, Omprakash added. (PTI)

2 arrested for killing couple, robbing

Bulandshahr: Two persons have been arrested for allegedly killing a couple in March and robbing Rs 1.5 lakh from them, police said on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, Ajay and Veer Singh were arrested yesterday for killing 30-year-old Jaipal and his lover Kavita (28) in March and looting Rs 1.5 lakh that the couple had given to one of the accused for their marriage, SP (Rural) Ashok Kumar said. Jaipal had approached his friend Ajay for helping him to marry his lover in court, for which he had arranged a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh, he said. The accused promised the victim of help and submitted the money with Singh, one of his own accomplices, police said. “On March 15, Jaipal and Kavita were taken to Nagar, a village under Arniya police station area on the pretext of getting them married in court the next day,” Kumar said.
