Police constable injured in counter-insurgency operation
Diphu: An Assam Police constable was injured when suspected militants fired upon security forces during a counter-insurgency operation at Disapur near the Assam-Nagaland border on Tuesday. The security personnel were fired upon at around 4 am and the constable, Pranab Bora, sustained injuries on his hand and left corner of his chest above the bullet-proof vest, district Superintendent of Police M J Mahanta said. The counter-insurgency operation was being conducted by the police and army personnel. The army also retaliated and during search operation in the area, one person identified as Debo Fonglo was found dead, the SP said. Fonglo’s son claimed that his father mistaking the security personnel to be miscreants from across Nagaland had fired at them, Mahanta said. Meanwhile, the injured constable was admitted to Diphu Civil Hospital where he was stated to be out of danger, he added. (PTI)

Man arrested for offering bribe to police officer
Tezpur: A man was arrested for allegedly offering a bribe to a police officer in Assam’s Sonitpur district who was probing a rape case, police said on Tuesday. A person, identified as Saha Ali, allegedly offered a bribe of Rs one lakh to the Investigation Officer of Dhekiajuli police station urging him not to take action against Rajibul Rahman who was accused of raping the girl on May 22 at Bosa Simolu gaon in Barsala. The police arrested both Ali and Rehman, who was absconding since the incident, last night, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar said. (PTI)

Huge quantity of banned drugs seized by police
Kohima: A huge quantity of banned drugs worth Rs 5.8 lakh in the black market was seized in the wee hours on Tuesday, police said. A seizure was made after a combined team of Kohima police and 14 NAP (IR) while checking a Manipur-bound vehicle found two bags containing 58,000 capsules of banned Spasmo-Proxyvon drug concealed inside the seat of the vehicle on National Highway-29. Police also nabbed two passengers of the vehicle for possession and illegally transporting the banned drugs. (PTI)

Five cadres of Tiwa Liberation Army arrested
Morigaon: Five cadres of a newly formed militant outfit Tiwa Liberation Army (TLA), active in Central Assam, have been arrested in Karbi Anglong district. Acting on a tip-off, the police of Morigaon district launched an operation in the neighbouring district and nabbed the militants at Kumarkuchi on Monday night, Morigaon Superintendent of Police Ainul Haque said here on Tuesday. The police recovered Rs 70,000 from the cadres and their interrogation was on. Earlier, the police acting on a tip-off that the outfit’s self-styled Commander-in-Chief Bidyut Amsong was in the area, had conducted search operations at Dimapur in Nagaland but he managed to escape. The outfit was formed about three months ago and was active along the Morigaon-Megahalaya border and during the last two months had issued extortion notes to businessmen and civil servants posted in the area, Haque added. Gogoi exhorts youth to join defence
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday said that his government has been according top priority to finding employment avenues for the youth. Addressing an army recruitment rally here, Gogoi said the state government always encouraged youths to find employment in the defence forces, be it the army or navy or other wings. Pointing that people from the state were in top positions in different sectors across the country, the CM said the government was committed to lend its help in training and guiding the youth to ensure that they continue to represent the state at the highest official levels. He further said the state government would work in coordination with the central forces to ensure that more youths from the state get employment with the latter. Lauding the holding of army recruitment rally, Mr Gogoi said such programmes help the youth in finding employment and urged upon the army to continue conduct such recruitment drives in the future. Assam Police female constable kills self over jilted love
Guwahati: A female constable of Assam Police has allegedly committed suicide in her official quarter in the premise of Laluk police station in North Lakhimpur district of Assam. The constable, identified as Julie Devi, is suspected to have killed herself on Monday night and her body was recovered on Tuesday morning by her family members. As per thr police, a note was recovered near the body and it appeared to be a case of a failed love affair. Investigation has been started to ascertain whether it was a case of suicide. (UNI)
