Adelbert hospitalised

SHILLONG: Former KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum, who has been on indefinite hunger strike for the last two weeks, was hospitalized on Saturday night after his health condition started deteriorating.
Nongrum is demanding passing of Village Administration Bill by the state government.
It was on May 16 that Nongrum began his hunger strike and a few others followed him.
Though there was appeal from the state government to end the fast, Nongrum asserted that the Village Bill should be passed by the government first and amendments can be brought later.

3 out of arrested 7 get judicial remand

SHILLONG: Three out of seven persons arrested by police for allegedly instigating crowd at the venue of HYC-called public rally on Friday were remanded to 12 days judicial custody on Saturday.
East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang said that altogether seven persons were arrested. “Four of the arrested were admitted in Civil Hospital and three  were forwarded to court on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody for 12 days,” he said.
The arrested persons have been identified as six women Banisha Nongsiej (21), Barisha L. Mawphlang (38), Caroline Nongrum (37), Banisha L. Nongrang, (38),   Aisuk Dirborn ( 35) Kerdalin Biam(33) and the lone male  Ialam Shympliang (32).
The SP also cautioned people from spreading misinformation about the incident.
“There are attempts to spread misinformation to the public through social media with a design to bring about a breakdown of law  and order, police can take legal action for spreading such misinformation”, the SP warned.
The police official also said that HYC was not granted permission by the district administration to hold a public rally at the Kiang Nongbah statue site near Civil Hospital as the venue was just a few metres from the Civil Hospital which is a ‘no noise zone’. “Moreover, there is no space in the area for holding a big public rally and all traffic will be affected which will have a rippling effect in the whole city”, the SP said.
He said that on May 28, the district administration clamped Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any meeting within 500 metres of Civil Hospital for the interest of public.
On the same day, a meeting was held between the district administration and HYC members where it was made clear to them that they should comply with the order u/s 144 CrPC but on their insistence for a rally near proposed venue, it was allowed at Laban Sports Club ground with a number of conditions mainly that meeting should be over by 3.00 pm and that no procession should be taken out after the meeting. Prior to the meeting, they requested for an audience with Adelbirth Nongrum, MDC which was allowed and a 5 member delegation met him. The meeting started off, but when they crossed the deadline, a magistrate went up to the podium to remind them that they have exceeded the timing but they refused to listen.
Around 5 PM, they ended their meeting and came out in a procession which is against the condition. On reaching Civil Hospital point, they wanted to forcibly move to ‘U Kiang Nongbah’ statue site and women police in the front tried to block them. But they tried to break the cordon by assaulting the woman police personnel and officers who were in the front line which compelled police to resort to mild lathi charge. The reason for the number of women being injured was due to the fact that the male HYC volunteers used the female volunteers in front to act as their shield, the SP said
The police official also said that the organisation had called for a shutdown of colleges and schools so that the children can be taken to the rally. Their aim was to put the school children in front so that police will not be able to react and enable them to break the Section 144 Cr PC prohibitory order. However, this was thwarted when police officers visited all schools and colleges on May28 instructing all the institutions not to send their children.
