Rare surgery performed
SHILLONG: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) has achieved another milestone in the field of cardiac surgery by successfully performing a Minimally Invasive Beating Heart Valve Replacement Surgery on a 36-year-old male from Jorhat, Assam a few days back.
The patient was suffering from rheumatic heart disease and one of the valves in his heart was severely narrowed leading to tiredness and easy fatigability affecting his normal day to day activity.
Heart Valve Surgery in the form replacement and repair of a single valve, double valve or triple valve is being regularly performed in NEIGRIHMS with excellent results since the inception of cardiac surgical department in the year 2007.
But in this patient, a new form of technique was being adopted to perform the same so as to ensure speedy recovery with less post operative pain, besides being cosmetically acceptable and cost effective in terms of reduced hospital stay, the NEIGRIHMS sources said on Wednesday.
In conventional form of open heart surgery, the operation is performed after opening the chest by cutting through the breast bone in the midline. In this particular case, apart from the Minimally Invasive Surgery, the entire operation was performed with a beating heart all throughout the operation. Though Beating Heart Coronary Bypass Surgery is common these days but Beating Heart Valve Surgery is a newer concept and performed in very few selected centers of India.
The surgery was successfully conducted by a team of cardiac surgeons lead by Prof AG Ahangar , Director, NEIGRIHMS, along with Head of the Department Cardiac Surgery, Prof. Manuj Kr. Saikia, and Assistant Prof. Cardiac Surgery, Dr. Jyoti Prasad Kalita.
The Surgery was supported by Cardiac Anesthesia team under the leadership of Additional Professor, Md.Yunus.
The Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery Department of NEIGRIHMS is very vibrant with all state of the art newer equipments and successfully performing all kinds of operations of Heart in newborn with congenital heart defects to adult and octogenarians with coronary and valvular heart diseases, besides performing operation of blood vessels and lungs to all needy patients from all states of the Northeastern region.
