Gogoi asks authorities to complete Gas Cracker Project
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday directed the authorities concerned to ensure completion of the Assam Gas Cracker Project being set up by Brahmaputra Crackers and Polymers Limited in Dibrugarh. The project has so far achieved an overall progress of 99.78 per cent and is expected to lay the groundwork for substantial investments to set up a slew of downstream plastic processing industries, the Chief Minister said during a review meeting at Lepetkata in Assam’s Dibrugarh district. The Gas Cracker Project is the first-ever petrochemical one in the North East and an offshoot of the historic Assam Accord signed in August 1985. Gogoi said that since the project carries historical importance, it should work towards fulfilling the dreams of the people of the North East and improve its economy. He said 136 plastic processing industries have been identified across the region as the offshoot of the Gas Cracker Project, which is expected to create job opportunities for the local youth. Gogoi also spoke of a joint venture between the Assam government and BCPL harnessing the benefits of downstream industries to solve the unemployment problem.(PTI)
Assam Rifles organises skill development programme
Kohima: The 17 Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarteers 5 and under the IGAR (N) is organising a Skill Development Programme on promotion of Cash Crops and Horticulture at Wokha. According to a statement issued by the PRO of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (IGAR-North) on Saturday, the six-week programme aiming to encourage self-reliance for unemployed youths and local farmers of Wokha dist is undertaken by Assam Rifles in collaboration with Tata Trusts from September 7 to October 17.  Under this venture, training on promotion of Cash Crops and Horticulture will be conducted by experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Wokha and the School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASARD) Medziphema, where a total of 40 local youths and farmers are attending the programme. Body found at Thoubal
Imphal: A body was found at the road side of Thoubal Sabal Tongba Ikop Pat lane in Manipur’s Thoubal district early this morning, police said. The body was sent to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for post mortem, the police said. The deceased was identified as Akoijam Binoy of Thoubal Wangma Taba village of Thoubal district, the police added. (PTI)
Assam Rifles shoot dead 1 FGN/NNC cadre in Nagaland
Kohima: Assam Rifles personnel on foot patrol shot dead a cadre of the underground ‘Federal Government of Nagaland/Naga National Council’ (FGN/NNC Non-Accordist) in a retaliatory action near K T colony of Tuensang. A statement issued by the PRO of the Inspector general of Assam Rifles (IGAR -North) said, the patrol team was out on road opening task from Tuensang to Nagaland Armed Police Camp for movement of their convoy on Friday. When the lead soldier reached the area some shots were fired from inside a house towards the jawans. The soldier immediately fired back and killed one person. The PRO claimed that the person belonged to FGN/NNC (N/A), identified as one  Chaang Bushie Chang. Upon searching the house, one more FGN/NNC (N/A) functionary, capt Tiameren Chang was arrested along with others. Later, upon questioning, it was learnt that some rebels had come to the house to have liquor. On seeing the Assam Rifles troops, they panicked and fired two rounds from their pistol. Two other cadres who had fired upon the troops, managed to escape, PRO said. (UNI)
3 PREPAK ultras held
Imphal: Three militants belonging to different groups of People Revolutionary Army of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were arrested by combined forces of Assam Rifles and Manipur police in last two days from different parts of in Manipur. A combined team of 2 Assam Rifles and a cadre of PREPAK (PRO) group identified as K Naoba (24), self-styled corporal of Khoirom Mamang Leikai area of Thoubal district was picked up on September 11 and was handed over to Yairipok police station, an Assam Rifles release said. Another woman militant cadre of outlawed PREPAK was arrested by a combined team of lady police of Manipur’s Imphal East district and Assam Rifles (AR) of 9 Sector under the aegis of Inspector General of AR at Pangei area while conducting vehicular check on September 10 last, the release said adding that She was identified as Chanchan (38) of Nongkam village near Moreh international border town of Manipur’s Chandel district. She was handed over to Heingang Police station for further investigation, the release added.He confessed of involvement in extortion activities in Imphal area to raise party fund and was handed over to Heingang police station, the release said.
