Demand for holiday on Sept 24

SHILLONG: The East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) has urged the State Government to declare a ‘holiday’ on September 24 in East Jaintia Hills in memory of the two people who were killed in police firing at Mookhep on the same day last year.
“We had submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of East Jaintia Hills with the request but are yet to receive any response from the official,” EJNC president Shanbok Syad said on Friday.
“If not this year then the government can declare September 24 as a holiday from next year onwards,” Syad said, while mentioning that they have also requested the government to declare September 24 as ‘Martyr Day’.
Syad, further, mentioned that they would observe ‘black flag day’ on September 24 besides holding a candle light vigil at 6 pm at the exact spot where the firing incident had occurred.
He also stated that the State Government has given a compensation of only Rs.3 lakh each to the families of the two victims even though the families had demanded a compensation of Rs.10 lakh.
It may be recalled that two persons – Derestmon Siangshai and Setlang Phawa – were killed in police firing at Mookhep, East Jaintia Hills, on September 24, 2014.
