Man falls at an under-construction road site, dies in MP
Katni (MP): A 45-old man died as he fell at an under-construction road following which a road roller ran over him, police said on Sunday. The incident took place at Khadra village near here on Friday. As per initial investigations, the deceased Latori Burman of Bahoriband tehsil had gone to a fair at Kua village. While returning home in an inebriated state, he fell on the road, which was under construction, Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Kamla Joshi said. A truck engaged in road construction work poured the hardening material on Burman in the night. Subsequently, the road roller ran over the road under which Burman got buried and died, she added. As the victim did not return home, his family members on Saturday, started a search for him. They found his slippers lying around and noticed blood spots on the road under construction near their house, she said.  His body was handed over to family members yesterday, police said. (PTI)
Veteran Communist Sadhan Gupta dies
Kolkata: Veteran Communist leader and independent India’s first visually challenged MP, Sadhan Gupta, has passed away, family sources said on Sunday. Gupta, 98, died late Saturday. His mortal remains will be taken to his alma mater Calcutta Blind School and then to the CPI-M state committee office. Blinded by smallpox as an infant, he went on to become the first blind Advocate General of West Bengal in 1986. Unsuccessfully contesting the country’s first Lok Sabha election against Shyamaprasad Mookerjee from Kolkata Southeast, Gupta became the first visually challenged MP by wining the by-poll following Mookerjee’s death. He was re-elected in 1957, from Calcutta East, and remained a member of the Lok Sabha till 1962. (IANS)
Two bodies recovered across Jammu
Jammu: Two bodies, including one having bullet marks under mysterious circumstances, were recovered in this town on Sunday. “Body of one Abdul Majid, resident of village Dharana, tehsil Mendhar, district Poonch was recovered this morning from GREF Camp Near BG area of Rajouri,” police here said. They said the man had died of bullet injury on his head. A case has been registered and investigations started. Meanwhile in another incident, a body was recovered from a canal in the city outskirts. The deceased was identified as Bushan Lal Raina (69), resident of Durga Nagar. The body was found at Beli Charana Canal and shifted to GMC, Jammu and the matter is being investigated. (UNI)
Jaya inaugurates a slew of projects woth Rs 41.77 crore
Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today inaugurated a slew of projects at a cost of over Rs 41.77 crore. This included community centres, primary health centres and houses for tsunami victims, an official release said,  Ms Jayalalithaa inaugurated various facilities which included community centres, rest rooms for washermen, primary health centres, schools, parks, ward offices, houses for tsunanmi victims, power and urea generation plant, LED lamps, street names bearing Tamil names, estimated at over Rs 41.64 crores. She also inaugurated the newly built Keelpennathur MLA?s office constructed at the cost of Rs 13 lakh.  The Chief Minister inaugurated these facilites in different parts of the State through video conferencing from the State Secretariat. In Chennai, at her assembly constituency of R K Nagar, ordinary lamps were replaced with 6,030 LED lamps at a cost of Rs 15 crore.  (UNI)
Activists demanding CBI probe into woman DSP’s suicide arrested
Coimbatore: The city police on Sunday arrested about 30 activists of Adi Dravidar Katchi when they tried to lay siege to IG- West Zone office and shouted slogans demanding CBI investigation into the suicide of DSP Vishnupriya. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Thiruchengodu in Namakkal district 26-year-old R Vishunupriya committed suicie by hanging at her house on Friday last. The state government has ordered a probe by CBCID) into the suicide by Vishnupriya. She was the investigating officer in the case relating to the murder of Dalit V Gokul Raj. The youth’s body was found on the railway track near Pallipalayam on June 24. She had arrested more than 12 persons in connection with the case and was on the look out for the main accused Yuvaraj, President of Dheeran Chinnamalai Peravai. (UNI)
 DCA inspects 25 PMU
Hyderabad: Drugs Control Administration (DCA) has carried out inspections at 25 Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Units (PMU) from September 18 to 20. The aim of these inspections was to ascertain and ensure that Good Manufacturing Practices are being followed by these manufacturers. Each of the manufacturing unit was inspected by a team headed by an Assistant Director and 2 Drug Inspectors. The inspections were spread over 2 days per unit.The teams and areas were shuffled. Each team was sent to an area other than his original jurisdiction. In two cases, registration of specific cases. Drugs worth Rs. 33.75 lakhs have been ‘frozen’ and declared ‘ Prohibited for sale’. In 23 cases, issued show cause notices asking them for explanation and hearing the version of the manufacturer collection of details of products dispensed or sold, a statement from DCA said on Sunday. Undertrail escapes from hospital; manhunt launched
Nahan (HP): An undertrial prisoner lodged in Central jail on charges of rape escaped from the hospital, where he was admitted following stomach pain, after dodging security guards. Sanni alias Ajay Kumar, 31, accused of raping a 15-year-old girl of Rukhri village under Nahan sub-division, escaped from the Male Surgical Ward of Nahan hospital yesterday where he was admitted after he complained of stomach ache, police said. A massive manhunt has been launched to nab Kumar. “We are making all out efforts to nab the accused and have some vital clues about his whereabouts,” said Superintendent of Police, Sirmour, Soumya Sambsivan. Kumar was arrested by the Nahan police last month along with his two other accomplices for raping the girl in a hotel on the intervening night of August 26 and 27, police said. He was booked under various sections of the IPC and POCSO Act and kept in judicial custody in Model Central Jail, Nahan, police said. (PTI)
