SHILLONG: HSPDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit has asked the Government to provide AK 47 rifles to the people to defend themselves if the Government cannot protect the lives and properties of people residing in international and inter-state borders.
Raising a question during the Question Hour, Basaiawmoit narrated the plight of the border residents who face the atrocities committed by miscreants and militants from across the border, both international and inter-state. In his reply, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, while sharing the concern of the member, said that the government had initiated a number of steps to equip the police to deal with any law and order situation in the borders.
He said that recently along the inter-state border, three persons were arrested and cases had been registered, while in the international border, 22 cases were reported and 35 persons arrested. “Besides coming up with a number of police stations, the plan to upgrade the outposts and police stations are also on the anvil,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister said that to protect the lives and properties and to ensure peace and security of the border residents, the Government has set up seven police stations,14 outposts, eight border outposts, two check gates and three anti-dacoity camps along the inter-state border with Assam. Sangma said that the Government had set up 12 police stations, 10 patrol posts, 11 check posts, four additional check posts, three passport check gates, four watch posts and one outpost along the international border with Bangladesh.
