NONGSTOIN/ SHILLONG: The mortal remains of Hoping Stone Lyngdoh will be taken to Nongstoin on Monday where the people of West Khasi Hills along with the District Administration will pay tribute to the late leader at New Nongstoin Ground at noon.
The President of HSPDP’s Nongstoin unit and MDC, L.G Nongsiej requested the people of West Khasi Hills to come forward and pay their last respects to the great leader.
Meanwhile, condolences continued to pour in for the State’s oldest and longest serving legislator Hoping Stone Lyngdoh who passed away in a city hospital in the wee hours of Saturday.
Tura MP and former Lok Sabha Speaker, Purno A Sangma while paying tribute to the late HSPDP leader described him as a thoroughly honest man.
“Lyngdoh was completely committed to the cause of the poor and dedicated his life for the tribal people,” Sangma said.
DD Lapang, Chief Advisor to the Government of Meghalaya, expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members of Lyngdoh. In a condolence message addressed to the HSPDP chief’s younger sister, Sildaris Lyngdoh, Lapang termed Hoping Stone Lyngdoh as one of the founding fathers of Meghalaya and someone who “always kept the interests of the people and the State as supreme”.
“His impeccable record of service, integrity of character and spirit of dedication is indeed a legacy that posterity will long remember and honour,” Lapang said adding that Late Lyngdoh was a personality who commanded great respect and his passing away was a great loss to the State.
The UDP also condoled the sudden demise of Lyngdoh during an emergency meeting of the party.
“Hoping Stone Lyngdoh shall always be remembered as the undisputed leader from West Khasi Hills. In his death, the State has lost an honest leader who sacrificed his entire life for the people,” UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said.
The FKJGP, while condoling the death of the veteran political leader and HSPDP supremo, said, “We cannot forget his contributions especially during the Hill State movement.”
The FKJGP also said that despite spending decades in politics Lyngdoh was untouched by corruption.
Meanwhile, the Syiem and Executive Dorbar of Hima Mawiang expressed sorrow over the sudden demise of Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, who was also the “Basan Rangbah” of Hima Mawiang.
“We have lost a great leader who was instrumental in the statehood movement. It is extremely difficult to get back a political leader of his stature who was ready to sacrifice everything for the interest of his people,” Syiem of Hima Mawriang, N Syiem said in a statement issued here on Sunday.
The State Council of the CPI also expressed grief at the death of Lyngdoh. In a statement issued here on Sunday the CPI’s State secretary said, “Hoping Stone Lyngdoh was respected by all for his honesty and integrity. He was a mass leader who had tremendous appeal.”
The Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) also condoled the death of the veteran political leader.
“He would always be with us in our movement against uranium mining at Kylleng-Pyngdengsohïong-Mawthabah, South West Khasi Hills. In his death we have lost a great leader who always kept the interest of the people above everything else,” the LYWA said.
The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (comprising of Ka Dorbar ki Khlieh Nongsynshar Ka Ri Hynniewtrep, Federation of Khasi States, Sirdarship, Ka Dorbar Ki Dolloi, & Council of Nokmas) expressed sorrow at the demise of Lyngdoh.
“He has left behind a bench mark in the politics of Meghalaya. He served as a representative for more than 50 years and gained immense respect from the people of the State with his simple and humble approach to all difficulties and challenges,” the Grand Council said.
