World Tourism Day celebrated

Shillong: The World Tourism Day was celebrated across the globe including Meghalaya on September 27 with the theme, “One Billion Tourists, One Billion Opportunities”.
This year’s celebration focused on global potential of tourism for socio-economic development.
In Meghalaya, the Tourism Department celebrated the day by organizing cleanliness drives at important tourist spots and places of importance including Motphran, Lady Hydari Park and Wards’ Lake that witnessed participation from a large number of people.
Parliamentary Secretary, Tourism, Kennedy C. Khyriem, Chairman MTDC, David Nongrum, Principal Secretary, Tourism, R. V. Suchiang and Director, Tourism, R. C Sohkhlet were present in the occasion .
Later in the day, Khyriem also inaugurated the Cafetaria at Wards’Lake called the Bamboo Hut Cafe, a unit of the MTDC.     In Tura, in a bid to boost tourism and improve tourist amenities, a new scheme called Meghalaya Tourism Development and Investment Promotion Scheme 2012 was initiated by the Tourism Department wherein entrepreneurs will be given financial assistance to establish resorts and home-stay facilities. The World Tourism Day was also observed at the South West Khasi Hills DC’s office in Mawkyrwat
