Panic among patients at Nongstoin Civil Hospital
NONGSTOIN: Furazolidone a medicine routinely used to cure Diarrhoea in children now comes packed with ‘worms’ in Nongstoin.
The medicine supplement which is commonly prescribed to child patients at the Nongstoin Civil Hospital recently triggered a panic reaction when Barilang Lyngkhoi, a mother of a three and half year old child, found a worm inside a bottle of the medicine.
The Furazolidone bottle with manufacturing date of September 2013 and expiry date of August 2016, as printed on the bottle, was manufactured by Umbilical Pharmaceuticals of Vijapur, Mehsana, Gujarat, and marketing by Adore Health.
Barilang Lyngkhoi, a resident of Mawkyrwat but residing as a tenant in Nongstoin, on Thursday informed that the incident had occurred on September 26 when she took the medicine for her daughter Wandashisha Lyngkhoi (aged 3 yrs 8 months) from the Nongstoin Civil Hospital and found that the bottle contained a worm inside it, but not before administering three doses of the prescribed medicine to her ailing daughter.
“I was shocked to see the worm inside and I was scared about what will happen to my daughter?” Barilang said.
As the news about the presence of a worm inside a bottle of medicine spread, the Khasi Students’ Union Nongstoin Circle along with the KSU South West Khasi Hills Circle met doctors at the Civil Hospital to inquire about the case.
Dr. Nongkhlaw of Nongstoin Civil Hospital admitted that the medicine was provided by the hospital but slammed the manufacturer for committing such a blunder that could potentially put a life at risk.
The KSU asked the Health Minister and the Health & Family Welfare department to conduct an inquiry into the incident and also demanded that the State Government should scrap its contract with the manufacturer.
