Forex agent dupes doctor of Rs 29 lakh in Maharashtra
Thane: A forex agent has allegedly duped a doctor from Vasai area here of Rs 29 lakh, police said on Monday. Vasai resident Dr Amol Ahivale used to frequently travel to Australia for work and had in May 2014 handed over Rs 40 lakh to one Ragen Mehta of a foreign exchange company in Thane to deposit money into his account during his stay in the foreign country, they said. According to a complaint lodged by Ahivale with Thane Nagar Police Station on Saturday, Mehta failed to deposit the sum and even did not return it to him, Inspector R R Chavan said. The complaint further stated that Mehta agreed to return the entire sum to Ahivale and has returned part of it. The medico has alleged that Mehta duped him of Rs 29 lakh, Chavan said. A case has been lodged under IPC sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) against the forex agent. The officer said investigation has begun and they are ascertaining if the agent had valid licence to run his business. (PTI)
MP church named after Italian girl who died of cancer
Bhopal: A church in Sironj town of Madhya Pradesh has been named after Italy’s Chiara Badano, a cancer patient who was beatified in 2010. This is the first church in the world dedicated to Chiara, who lived in the village of Sassello in the Province of Savona in Italy and died as a teen. “On September 25, the first Catholic church at Sironj in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh was consecrated by me. It is the first church in the world dedicated to Blessed Chiara Badano, who was a cancer patient,” Bishop Anthony Chirayath of Sagar told PTI today. The Bishop said that he took special permission from Vatican to name the church after her as she was already “beatified and was in a process to attain sainthood.” The church was inaugurated by Chiara’s parents Teresa and Ruggero Badano, who came from Italy along with friends and devotees from several countries in Europe and Asia. Villagers in UP’s Shamli warn of panchayat polls boycott
Muzaffarnagar: Dismayed over not being alloted a polling centre in their village for the Panchayat polls, residents of Gangeru in Shamli district have threatened to boycott the local elections. In a panchayat convened yesterday, villagers threatened to boycott the panchayat polls in protest against setting up of a polling centre in another village Gharishayam, said Rauf Hasan, a resident of the village. Another resident, Dr Ahsan, informed that their demand for a polling booth to be set up in their village has not been met, leading to their decision of boycotting the polls. Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled to start from October 9. (PTI)
IAF flags off modified bus to attract youth
New Delhi: The IAF on Monday flagged off a modified bus with simulator zone, glastron goggles and various aircraft models in a bid to encourage youth to pursue a career in the air force. “This bus is basically meant for encouraging our youth all over the country…to get them acquainted to the IAF as a career, as a way of life. I think we need to reach out to all the young boys and girls to (motivate them to) join the air force,” IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said. Last year, the IAF had launched an air combat 3D mobile game to attract the next-generation youth. The bus, which costs Rs 2 crore, will visit several educational institutes across the country. The Induction Publicity Exhibition Vehicle boasts of touch panels, i-pads, simulator and video screens that students can use. The vehicle has an information zone which would give aspirants all career related information. It also has an experience zone where one can discover the thrill of various IAF activities like Sarang aerobatics, flying among others. (PTI)
Woman thrown off a moving train in UP
Muzaffarnagar: An unidentified woman, allegedly thrown off a moving train, was found unconscious along the tracks on the Delhi-Saharanpur railway route in Shamli district, police said on Monday. A local spotted the woman lying unconscious near the railway track of Budhpur railway station last evening. She was immediately rushed to a hospital in Shamli, SHO, Railway Protection Force, Ajay Kumar said. The woman, in her late 30s, is suspected to have been thrown off a moving train, he said. She was later shifted to the district hospital after her condition worsened, the SHO said. (PTI)
WB: Bus carrying wedding party overturns, 1 dead
Burdwan (WB): One person was killed and 32 others injured when a bus carrying a wedding party overturned near Khandaghosh area in the district, a police official said. The accident occurred at Ahladipur village reportedly due to a mechanical failure. The driver lost control of the bus which turned turtle, the official said. However, the bride and the groom were not among the passengers in the bus, the official said. (PTI)
