Guwahati: An Inspector of the Assam Police posted at Rangiya in Kamrup district was arrested on Monday on charges of aiding a gang of criminals who had looted a van carrying Rs 19 lakh cash for replenishing an ATM on October 20.
Kamrup SP Indrani Barua said Inspector Bhupen Das, who is officer-in-charge of Rangiya police station had connived with a gang of criminals and allegedly wanted a share of the loot.
“Investigation has revealed that Inspector Das was involved in planning the loot of the van that was carrying Rs 19 lakh from Nalbari to Baihata Chariali for refilling an ATM belonging to Axis Bank,” a senior police official said.
“Though the police Inspector was not present at the spot where the van was intercepted and looted at gun-point, he had allegedly met the gang of criminals at a dhaba on NH-52 where he had discussed about the robbery with the gang,” the official further informed.
The police have booked Inspector Das under Section 120(B) of the IPC. Another person – one Iftikar Saikia has also been arrested. Four other members of the gang are still at large. Iftikar Saikia’s Maruti WagonR car that was used for carrying the looted cash has been also seized, but the police are yet to recover the cash.
