NONGSTOIN: After a marathon meeting held here on Thursday night, the HSPDP has decided to allot the party ticket to Dios Jyndiang, the personal assistant of late Hoping Stone Lyngdoh, based on his claims that he had been blessed by the late leader to be his successor from Nongstoin.
The decision to allot the party ticket was taken during a close-door meeting of the party leaders including newly elected president Ardent Basaiawmoit, party MLAs from West Khasi Hills K.P. Pangniang and Witting Mawsor and MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem.
Emerging from the marathon three-hour meeting, Pangniang, who is the secretary of the HSPDP West Khasi Hills Unit, announced Jyndiang’s candidature.
Though HSPDP MDC L.G. Nongsiej’s name was initially considered, the party leaders decided not to risk losing the Nongstoin MDC seat by allowing Nongsiej to contest for the MLA’s post as he would have to quit the MDC post to contest the election.
Earlier, a general gathering convened by the HSPDP Nongstoin Unit failed to zero in on the party candidate since there were varied opinions.
As the meeting which began at 11 am and concluded at 3 pm could not come to any conclusion, the Dorbar suggested the need to defer the meeting as they did not want to see any clash in the area. Finally, the top leaders held another meeting to select the candidate.
Earlier, there were many aspirants for the party ticket including Fenela Lyngdoh Nonglait and Doffley S. Lyngdoh.
The general meeting was attended by Basaiawmoit, Pangniang, other party leaders and thousands of HSPDP supporters from different primary units.
The meeting almost turned ugly when the huge crowd opposed the procedure of the meeting and demanded that all the aspirants should get a chance to address the gathering before finalization of the name.
The crowd alleged that HSPDP leaders including Basaiawmoit, Pangniang, Mawsor and others had earlier assured that the party candidate would be selected after considering the aspirations of the supporters, but had gone back on their assurance.
Fearing worsening situation, the Dorbar Shnong of Mawkhlam Nongpyndeng called off the meeting.
Meanwhile, unhappy supporters of Fenela L Nonglait, who was denied the party ticket, held another meeting at Nongstoin to decide on the future course of action.
