NONGPOH: Aggrieved over the step motherly attitude of the State government, especially the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), casual workers of the Health Department, Ri Bhoi, have decided to call an indefinite strike in the district from November 11.
The decision was taken by the casual workers’ body at a meeting held at the Nongpoh Community Hall, which was attended by around 100 casual workers serving in the Health department in the district.
Chairman of the health workers’ body, S. Thangkhiew, and secretary, K.M. Sylliang, on Monday said the casual workers had taken the decision of calling an indefinite strike in protest against the adamant attitude of the State government in not releasing their wages for the last eight months.
“Nonpayment of salary for the past eight months has put us in a difficult position with regards to providing daily bread for the family and payment of school fees for the children,” they said.
Thangkhiew and Sylliang also lamented that though they had urged and pleaded the higher ups for release of their salaries, all their pleas had fallen on deaf ears.
They further mentioned that it was not the first time that their payment was being held up as a similar situation had occurred in 2014 also.
The casual workers have urged the higher ups of the State government, the local representatives and the NGOs to look into their grievances and find an early solution to their problems.
