Two dead in road mishaps in State

SHILLONG: Two people died in separate road accidents in the State in the last couple of days.
Police said that on November 15 around 6.40 pm, a vehicle (number not known) knocked down one Teiborlang Makri (32) at Madan Umroi Shillong Bypass in Ri Bhoi.
He sustained injuries and was shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
In another incident, on November 14 around 9 pm, one truck (number not known) dashed against one motorcycle (ML-05G-2079) ridden by Edmund Nongsiej (21) at Mawlai Nongkwar, Shillong.
The rider died on the spot while two pillion riders sustained injuries and were shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital.
Inquiry is on in both the cases.

WJH traditional heads demand DC’s ouster

JOWAI: Headmen of Jowai town on Monday met Chief Secretary P.B.O. Warjri to demand transfer of West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Arun Kumar Kembhavi.
Reliable sources informed that a group of headmen from Jowai submitted a memorandum to the chief secretary and appraised him about various difficulties they were facing while dealing with the head of the district.
“Since his posting as the deputy commissioner of West Jaintia Hills he has never cooperated with the traditional heads of Jowai, not to mention about other traditional heads from remote area. He is a dictator,” said one of the headmen while speaking to this scribe.
Incidentally, some headmen, who did not wish to be named, said that the traditional heads also want the government to transfer West Jaintia Hills Addl. Deputy Commissioner C.S. Laloo.

Village Sordar accused of IAY misappropriation
SHILLONG: The Sordar of Wahrisain village in East Khasi Hills has been accused of fraudulently withdrawing money in the name of beneficiaries of the Indira Awaas Yojana.
One Baiarlin Mawlong and three others lodged a complaint that one Remilan Mawlong, Sordar of Wahrisain village in East Khasi Hills, fraudulently withdrew money in the name of the beneficiaries of the IAY 2008-2011.
When contacted, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S. Dkhar said he would look into the matter and if allegations are proved true, law will take its own course.

National Press Day observed in Jowai

Jowai: Members of the press fraternity under the banner of Jaintia Journalist Association (JJA) on Monday observed the National Press Day at the Office of Myntoilang Network, Iawmusiang, Jowai.
The small but impressive meeting chaired by JJA president, C.H. Passah, discussed in details the theme of the occasion ‘transparency in public offices’.
The meeting agreed that the role of the press was not only to expose corruption in public offices but it was also important that the press person themselves maintain transparency and integrity while performing their duty.
JJA welcomed to the fraternity Wyrta and Ri-luk, two new webzines from the district.

Gas explosion destroys house in Tura locality

TURA: A gas explosion in Ringre gittim locality of Tura on Monday evening caused extensive damage to a house but fortunately no one was hurt.
Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion occurred in the kitchen where the gas cylinder was placed. The house was occupied by a government employee, Marshal D Shira, and his family, but fortunately they were not present when the mishap occurred. The explosion caused severe damage to the Assam-type house.

Mentally unstable woman allegedly raped
SHILLONG: A mentally unstable woman was allegedly raped by one person at her residence at Dainadubi in North Garo Hills.
Police said that the incident happened on November 5 when one Andrew Momin allegedly raped the 45-year-old mentally unstable woman at her residence. Inquiry is on.

Miscreants damage cable TV office in city
SHILLONG: Unidentified miscreants forcefully entered the control room of M/s Manthan JP Ventures Pvt. Ltd., Police Bazar, Shillong, and removed digital set top boxes, damaged equipments and forced the staffs to sign some documents.
The incident happened on November 13 and a complaint in this regard has been lodged by Shyam Singhania.

Shops looted at Mawlonghat
SHILLONG: Unidentified miscreants robbed two shops at Mawlonghat on November 14.
A complaint lodged with police said that unknown miscreants broke open the liquor shop of one Paul Ryntathiang at Mawlonghat, Shillong and stole cash Rs.80,000.
In another case, a shopkeeper lodged a complaint that unknown miscreants stole cash Rs.2,000, one laptop, cigarettes, etc., from his shop at Mawlonghat.

Children’s Day prog
SHILLONG: In a belated event, the 125th birth anniversary of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was celebrated at Chibra Agal playground on Monday. The programme was organised by the ICDS Rongram Block and was aided and supported by Parliamentary Secretary Noverfield R. Marak who also graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Besides Marak, social worker Selma D. Shira and others addressed the gathering.
As part of the celebration, sports for children like cock fight, obstacle race, painting competition and musical chairs for mothers were organised.
