SHILLONG: A unique Amur Falcon festival will be held on November 25 at a Ri Bhoi village known for giving space for the bird species when they settle there for a brief period during their migration.
The festival will be held at Sailyndong play ground in Tyrso village under Mawhati, Ri Bhoi, on Wednesday.
The organizers said Amur Falcons used to visit Ri Bhoi end of November till the first week of December after their flight from Nagaland.
In the first week of November it is from South Africa that lakhs of Amur Falcons reach the Northeast.
According to the organizers, for the last six years, the migratory birds used to visit Tyrso village, but due to deforestation, now they come and take shelter at the nearby Umru forest area.
The villagers have decided not to kill these birds and allowed them to settle at Umru till they depart.
The festival organized by the Tyrso Valley Wild Life Protection Society in association with Basin Development Unit and supported by Mawhati legislator Julius Dorphang, will be inaugurated by the chief minister.
A visit to Umru village for watching these birds has been scheduled on the occasion.
