New Delhi: Khekiho Zhimomi, a Rajya Sabha member of Nagaland People’s Front, died at AIIMS on Thursday morning following a stroke.
The 69-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital here three days ago. He was shifted to ICU on Wednesday evening and was declared dead at 6.20 am on Thursday.
His will take place at Dimapur on Friday, family sources said.
An active social worker who strived for the uplift of weaker sections and downtrodden, Zhimomi represented Nagaland in the Rajya Sabha, which was adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
He was a Rajya Sabha member for two terms – from July 2008 to April 2010 and from April 2010 till his demise today.
He was first elected to the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 1989 and served as MLA for three terms from 1989 to 1992, from 1993 to 1997 and from 2003 to 2008. He also served as Cabinet Minister in charge of Industries and Commerce in the Nagaland People’s Council Government headed by Chief Minister Vamuzo in 1990.
Prez condoles : President Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of Khekiho Zhimomi.
In a condolence message to his wife, Khezheli Zhimomi, the President said, “I am sad to learn about the passing away of Mr Khekiho Zhimomi, sitting Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.”
“In his death, the nation has lost an eminent leader and social worker whose long years in public service will be remembered for years to come, ” he said. (Agencies)
