New education policy will benefit students, parents: Minister
New Delhi: The new education policy would help bring about many positive changes in the education system in the country and would equally benefit both students and their parents, the union government said on Monday. “Initiatives like e-pathshala and ‘Saaransh’ will help the students and parents,” union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said in the Lok Sabha while replying to questions on the proposed new education policy of the Narendra Modi government. The minister said students would be empowered through the new education policy, and added that she was yet to receive inputs though she had sent out a letter to all members of the Lok Sabha on the issue. “…under the e-pathshala programme, books will be made available online free of cost. These will be available on mobile phones also,” she told the house. Under another initiative, ‘Saaransh’, parents would be directly involved in the educational activities of their children and could get in touch with teachers directly through it, she said. The Lok Sabha proceedings for the day began with Speaker Sumitra Mahajan leading the house in paying homage to the victims of earthquakes, terror attacks and other tragedies across the world. Underlining India’s stand against all kinds of terror acts, Mahajan said India stood with France and the world against any terror activities. (IANS)
JMC builds new shelters for homeless
Jaipur: With winter settling in Rajasthan, Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) has started building six new shelters and renovating existing ones for the homeless in the city. Of the 41 night shelters, 20 are permanent structures equipped with quilts, food, water and other facilities. Six more permanent shelters have been planned, the setting up of which would taken up on war footing, Chairperson of JMC’s Public Welfare Committee Kusum Yadav said. Six temporary shelters have been erected at different locations for beggars and homeless as winter days set in while nine temporary homes would be completed by this weekend, she said. Over 2,000 poor people live in these shelter homes during the winter season every month from December to March, Yadav said. Meanwhile, Jaipur recorded the coldest night with mercury slipping to 11.3 degrees Celsius, a few notches less than yesterday when it was 11.5 degrees Celsius, a MeT report said. The hill station of Mount Abu recorded the lowest temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius and in the plains, Jawai Dam recorded the minimum of 7 degrees Celsius. Churu recorded minimum temperature of 9.7 degrees Celsius followed by Jalore 10.7 degrees Celsius, Ganganagar and Pilani 11.5 degrees Celsius each. The minimum temperature ranged between 11.7 and 17.6 degrees Celsius at several places including Ajmer, Kota, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Barmer. No significant change in winter pattern would be expected in next 24 hours in the state, the MeT forecast said. (PTI)
Fake currency seized from Bangladeshi national
Malda: BSF personnel today seized fake currency with a face value of Rs 18 lakh from a Bangladeshi national at Shobhapur border outpost in Malda district. The man identified as Mejarul Haque (30), a resident of Mandalpara under Shibganj police station limits of Chapai Nawabganj district, was apprehended and handed over to the police. He was taken to Baishnabnagar police station for interrogation and the police is trying to find out if here is any involvement of any militant outfit in this connection, Malda additional superintendent of police Abhishekh Modi said. The fake currency seized from him was in the denomination of 500 and 1,000 rupees notes, Modi said. (PTI)
Businessman killed in road mishap in UP
Pratapgarh: A businessman was on Monday killed and his employee injured when a motorcycle they were riding on was crushed by a four-wheeler in Kotwali area, a senior officer said here. Additional Superintendent of Police Neeraj Pandey said that Amit Kasaudhan (30), who was wholeseller of ‘ghutka’, and his employee Abul (50) were seriously injured when the motorcycle they were riding on collided with another vehicle near GRP police station. The injured were taken to a hospital where doctors declared Amit dead, he said. The incident occurred when Amit was going to catch Intercity Express for Kanpur this morning, the ASP said. He said that Amit’s family members have alleged that he was crushed to death and lakh of rupees were looted from him. Pandey said that an FIR would be lodged once a complaint was received. (PTI)
