Centre mulls change in citizenship Act

New Delhi: The Centre is contemplating to change the citizenship Act , 1955 ostensibly to accommodate migrant Hindus from neighbouirng Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“So far 2390 such persons have applied for citizenship,” Union Minister for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju told Rajya Sabha in reply to a question tabled by Wansuk Syiem.
The Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya wanted to know if there was a surge in the number of Hindus from neighbouring countries applying for Indian citizenship.
