Include Chetia in peace talks, demands ULFA

Guwahati: The pro-talks faction of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) , led by its ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa has made a formal request befire chief mnister of Assam Tarun Gogoi to facilitate involvement the recently extradited ULFA ‘general secretary’ Anup Chetia in the on-going peace process between the ULFA faction and the Government of India.
A team of ULFA (pro-talks) leaders, led by Arabinda Rajkhowa, formally met Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi here on Thursday evening with a request for inclusion of Anup Chetia, in the peace negotiations.
“The pro-talks ULFA leadership on Thursday formally placed before me the request to include Anup Chetia in the peace process. It was for the first time they (the ULFA pro-talks) placed a formal request in this regard” Gogoi said on Friday adding that he would pass on the request to the Central government as the extradited ULFA general secretary was now in judicial custody in connection with a case registered against him by the CBI.
He said the meeting with the ULFA delegation was a satisfactory one, though the main talks were progressing with the Central government.
Meanwhile, the ULFA leader Anup Chetia who was extradited from a Bangladeshi prison on November 11 last year and has expressed his willingness to join the peace talks.
He conveyed this through his wife Monica who had gone to meet in jail here. HI is one of the founder members of the ULFA and is widely respected with the organisation.The last round of peace talks between the outfit and the Centre was held at New Delhi last month, where the ULFA had placed its demand for including Chetia in the talks for carrying forward the political negotiations.
Besides, Rajkhowa, the outfit’s ‘vice-chairman’ Pradip Gogoi, ‘deputy c-in-c’ Raju Baruah and ‘foreign secretary’ Sashadhar Choudhury had participated in last evening’s meeting with the chief minister Gogoi here.
