CEM toughens stand on nominated MDC
SHILLONG: After the tussle over dual post, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and KHADC CEM P N Syiem seemed headed for another bout of slugfest, this time over selection of nominated MDC to the Council.
A day after the Chief Minister said that it is the state government which selects the nominated member to KHADC, the KHADC chief on Saturday asserted that the new nominated member would be selected through a resolution during the special session of the council scheduled to be on December 14 and the same will be sent to the Governor for his assent.
Earlier, the CEM had decided not to re-nominate Gabriel Wahlang, who jhad resigned as MDC to contest Nongstoin by-poll.
The CEM also pointed out that earlier in March, 2014, though the state government had recommended the name of ex-Congress MLA Adviser Pariong as the nominated member of KHADC, the then Governor KK Paul did not give his approval since the matter did not come through the decision of Executive Committee.
“Now we are going beyond the Executive Committee as the name will be okayed through a resolution during the special session which will be sent directly to the Governor with a copy to the district council affairs department,” Syiem said.
According to Syiem, the resolution is being brought by the Council as per the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) Rules.
“As per the rule, the Chairman has already convened the special session to take up the resolution on nominated member”, Syiem said.
He also said that based on the rule, the decision arrived at during the resolution will be communicated to the Governor in writing for his approval with a copy to the district council affairs department for information.
