SHILLONG: Around 128 meritorious students from Shella and 37 students from Nongtrai village were felicitated with cash and certificates at a function held at Shella organized by Lafarge on Saturday.
Additionally, 14 weavers (Nongtrai) and a weaver (Shella) received the stipend for the year, while 10 women weavers received the completion certificates.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, Lafarge Umiam Private Limited (LUMPL) said that 14 schools under Shella village Dorbar and 4 schools from Nongtrai received financial assistance as part of the social responsibility initiative of Lafarge.
While more than 5 students received sponsorship for higher technical education, 2 schools received enhanced salary for Hindi, Science and Math teachers.
Furthermore, 147 people attended the eye camp at Nongtrai and Shella and 19 persons were identified for cataract operations.
During the programme, Donkupar Roy, the local MLA appreciated the efforts of Lafarge in encouraging the students right from the primary level to the senior level to keep performing better. He also encouraged the parents to give the best education to their children.
Narayan Sharma, Director LUMPL said that students should pursue for excellence and that comes with hard work, discipline, consistency.
The students should have the spirit of competition to excel. He also encouraged students to pursue studies in mining and to be part of Lafarge family.
