TURA: South Garo Hills district joined the rest of Garo Hills in welcoming the winter festivities with the holding of the Tyisam Festival on the white sandy beaches of the Simsang river at Baghmara town wherein local artists and cultural troupes presented a dazzling display of color during the festival.
District Administration South Garo Hills in collaboration with the Arts & Culture Society Govt. of Meghalaya, Tourism Department and sponsors from the District and other parts of the State organized the festival.
Meghalaya Sports minister Zenith M Sangma inaugurated the festival and in his address to the gathering said that every year a substantial amount of money is being allocated by the State Government for this very purpose.
“The objective is to make the people around to get together and get the platform whereby people can showcase their hidden talent which are not being explored or identified by many of us”, he said.
He added that such festivals give a platform for many to showcase their talent and creativity.
“If someone is very talented then that itself is an asset to the state and to the community,” Sangma asserted.
Highlights of the festival included an Industrial Exhibition where more than thirty (30) stalls were put up from both the private and Government Departments and the local artisans and entrepreneurs from different parts of the state showcased their products.
Large crowds thronged to witness the Inter locality Tug of war, Boat race, Inter Block Folk dance Competition, Folk Song Competition, Beach Sports, among other events.
