CM alleges Centre’s ‘dilly-dally’ on citizenship to persecute foreigners
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Monday lambasted the Centre for its ‘dilly-dally tactic’ for granting citizenship to ‘persecuted’ refugees and said that the Central leadership only pays lip service just to brighten its electoral prospects. Taking a dig at the Centre, Mr Gogoi said even after issue of notification, the NDA dispensation did not initiate any legislation with regard to ‘citizenship’ to the ‘persecuted’ refugees. Mr Gogoi asked External Affairs Minister Susma Swaraj, who made a comment on granting ‘citizenship’ to the refugees at a rally at Silchar yesterday, to clarify what concrete steps the Centre has taken in this regard. Mr Gogoi also questioned the sincerity of Ms Swaraj with regard to convincing the Central Government to bring a ‘bill’ for granting citizenship to the refugees. The Centre had issued a notification to exempt minority communities of Bangladesh and Pakistan, who have entered into India on or before December 31 2014 due to religious persecution there, from the relevant provisions of rules and order made under the Passport (Entry into India) Act, 1920 and the Foreigners Act, 1946. However, it is not clear whether citizenship will also be granted to these section of people. (UNI)
