Chinese mobiles, betel nuts seized by Customs

SHILLONG: Customs officers from Headquarters’ Preventive Unit, Shillong seized smuggled Chinese origin mobile handsets numbering over 200 valued Rs. 2.14 lakh from Guwahati on December 27. Later on Wednesday betel nuts worth over Rs 10 lakh were seized from Kamakhya Railway Station in a separate raid.
The consignment of mobiles was booked from New Delhi and reached Guwahati by Rajdhani Express train.
An official with the Customs, Shillong said on Wednesday that the Chinese made cell phones find their markets in Northeast after being smuggled from Delhi. The price of each smuggled phone ranges from Rs 800 to Rs 1400.
Meanwhile, briefing about the betel nut smuggling, the official said that preliminary investigation indicated that the consignment was smuggled through Manipur sector of Indo-Myanmar Border.
