SHILLONG: A gathering of alumni of visually impaired students of Montfort Centre for Education (MCE), Tura and Montfort Inclusive School, Guwahati was held at Montfort Centre, Tura for two days from December 28 to share, discuss, plan, ruminate and to build a platform “for a life worth and meaningful to self and others”.
It was a first of its kind meet, where 32 visually impaired participants gathered to share, discuss and plan for their future. The struggles, pain and successes undergone by each one inspired one another.
Bro. K. J. Jose, Director of MCE, welcomed the gathering and explained the purpose of the meeting.
He said that experience is the best teacher and sharing of each one’s life would enrich the others. He also called on the need to build a common forum to facilitate the life of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and to create awareness in the society about them.
B. Marak, employment officer from Tura, shared various possibilities and methods to register PEDs in the employment exchange office.
It was an eye opener for many to know that there is a separate register kept for PWDs in the employment exchange office.
In order to build a platform, a Disabled Person’s Organization was also formed for Garo Hills region to help such people create awareness in the society and raise their voice for their rights.
