SHILLONG: The name of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari of the Allahabad High Court is doing the rounds for appointment as the new Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya.
The Chief Justice’s seat fell vacant on Thursday after Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh went on superannuation.
Pending the appointment of new Chief Justice, Justice T.N.K. Singh will officiate as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court for another 15 days till his retirement on February 1.
Earlier, speculation was rife on the appointment of Acting Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court T. Vaiphei as the new Chief Justice but sources have now indicated that Justice Maheshwari is the front runner for the post.
With the current norm of one Chief Justice and three more Judges in every High Court, there will be appointment of two more Judges in the High Court.
Sources said that the senior Meghalaya advocates H.S. Thangkhiew, T.T. Diengdoh, V.G.K. Kynta and M. Diengdoh are in the race for the two posts of Judges.
When contacted, officials of the High Court and the Law department said there was no communication regarding the appointment of Chief Justice and other Judges.
