Top female boxers to take part in Test event from tomorrow

Mary Kom ‘most likely’ to flag off mini marathon in city

SHILLONG: Top women boxers from across the country will descend on Shillong for the boxing Test games and trials for the upcoming South Asian Games.
Come Tuesday, top Indian women boxers including the likes of MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Aruna Mishra and others will be seen in action at the NEHU, SAI Special Area Games venue in the city where they will participate in the Test event for boxing.
As many as 60 female boxers from across the country will battle it out in three categories—51 kg, 60 kg and 75 kg—during the four-day event.
Working president of Meghalaya State Olympic Association, John F Kharshiing said that the event will comply with international guidelines and all the equipment required for the games like the scoring machines etc., will be put in place.
He also hoped that the Test games will help the boxers rehearse well for that coveted gold medal in the SAG finals.
He also informed that selection trials for men’s category for the South Asian Games, has already been held in Patiala.
It may be mentioned that earlier, in the month, the Test event of archery was conducted successfully in the city. Top archers from across the country had taken part in the event.
Meanwhile, Olympic bronze medal winner MC Mary Kom is likely to flag off the “Run for North East” along with Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
The 5 km mini marathon is being organised in the city on January 21 as a prelude to the 12th South Asian Games.
Bollywood star Milind Soman and other local celebrities will participate in the run. The Run Meghalaya team has also confirmed its participation in the event which will kick start from Fire Brigade ground at 8 AM and culminate at Polo.
A cultural performance will be organised post the run.
Those taking part in the mini marathon can compete in four categories—men, women, armed forces and students—all above 16 years of age. A 100 metres competition will also be held for people with disabilities.
