SHILLONG: Star boxer MC Mary Kom is all set for the Test event and trials for the upcoming 12th South Asian Games which begin at the NEHU, SAI Special Area Games here on Tuesday.
Mary Kom, who arrived here on Sunday evening, said her preparation is good for the trials and the ace boxer also hoped of a good show in the Games.
The Olympic bronze medalist expressed happiness to be back in Shillong for the second time. “Shillong is like a home away from home…the people here are similar to the ones back in Manipur and it’s good to be here again,” she said.
This will be a major event for Mary Kom after she won a gold medal in the Asian Games in South Korea in 2014. The superwoman from Manipur will compete in the 51 kg category.
Meanwhile, nearly 60 boxers from across the country are here to take part in the Test event and trials for boxing.
L Sarita Devi, Sajubala Devi and Aruna Mishra among others will also be seen in action during the Test event.
From Meghalaya, Ramisha Lyngdoh and Phiralin Nongrum will compete in the 51 kg and 60 kg weight categories respectively. Mercia Dohling is the coach for the State team.
Meanwhile, till day-end on Monday, confusion prevailed over the participation of the team from Tripura after the State’s Olympic Association reportedly refused to give a go ahead to the visiting contingent on grounds that non-domicile boxers had found place in the squad.
