Editor,
Now that a government servant can no longer become rangbah shnong or office bearer in the locality it is a big blow to the administration in the localities especially in Shillong where majority of the office bearers in the various localities are government servants.
In that case most of the localities will be administered by illiterates/half literates and people who have little knowledge of laws and rules. This setback to the localities is the end result of the high handedness, hasty and nasty acts of the leaders of the Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong like Dr Kharshiing, R Blah, etc who fell prey to self centred politicians like Pynshngain Syiem, SD Khongwir and the KHNAM and took several ugly agitations against the Governor and the CM.
These rangbah shnongs followed by hundreds of senseless traditional heads and few hooligans of the KSU and HYC ultimately took personal grudge against the CM at the behest of the CEM of the KHADC in uncivilized fashion for e.g by spitting at the photo of the CM, which is condemnable by all right thinking and civilized citizens of this earth. In this way their movement for the VAB became political in nature which has led us to nowhere.
Therefore the persons to be blamed for the down fall of governance in the localities are squarely Dr W Kharshiing and Mr R Blah. We hope there will be personalities of good sense who would come forward to take the leadership and lead our society back to sensible state of affairs.

Good Decision
Editor,
The decision of the State Government to prohibit government employees from getting involved in other non government organizations is a step in the right direction. Many headmen in Shillong and other villages are government servants, such practice is not good, for the efficiency, discipline and loyalty in the government establishments. Further by being headmen a person is engaged in implementing MLA/MP schemes, managing the MGNREGS works, issuing certificates, land dealings, etc. which are time taxing leaving little space for them to devote to their duties in government offices, thus affects efficiency and coming late to office and leaving early from office is mostly due to these factors. I would congratulate the government of Meghalaya for such endeavour and would also suggest for more reforms and streamlining in governance to improve the work culture in the state. One of the suggestions is to revive back the working 1st and 3rd Saturdays, to make 26th to 31st December( if not falling on Saturday and Sunday) as working days and also to convert all local holidays into restricted Holidays.
Yours etc.,

Pleasant news!
Editor,
The two news items published in your esteemed daily of January 8, 2016 under the caption, “Govt goes ahead with Irene” and ‘‘Govt debars its employees from holding other offices,” were indeed the most pleasant news for me. Government reasoning behind forwarding Irene Lyngdoh’s name that a ‘woman’ should be the nominated MDC since the KHADC has only two women MDCs is justifiable and highly laudable. However, I feel that efforts must be made to create more space for women’s participation in KHADC and this objective could be well achieved if certain percentage of seats in KHADC are exclusively reserved for women candidates. As for the other news item mentioned above, I fully support the view that “people in the government must do their job for which they are paid.” I only regret that such a decision has come so late.

A Synrem
