SHILLONG: At a time when the State’s own Umroi and Baljek airports are yet to get a face lift, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has advocated the need to upgrade the Guwahati airport.
Guwahati airport requires a special attention because the farmers who are engaging in floriculture and are trying to catch the global market are handicapped because of lack of facilities there, the chief minister said, while speaking at the Destination North East 2016, a festival organized by the Union Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Union Ministry of Culture for showcasing the inherent economic, social and cultural strength of the North East region at the national level.
He appealed to all the ministries concerned to come together and make the Guwahati airport the pride of the North East and provide the right kind of connectivity globally.
The chief minister also called for more investment to take care of the connectivity issue as most of the North Eastern states are not connected by airways and have to invest on road communication since almost all the states in the region are dependent on road connectivity.
The chief minister also said that he is looking forward to continued support from the Government of India and will collectively assume upon the responsibility of making the ambitious Destination North East a success and ensure that it becomes a game changer in creating a momentum of growth for the progress and prosperity of the nation as a whole.
