SHILLONG: Though the border fencing in Meghalaya is pending, work on installation of floodlights along the international border is likely to be completed within January next year.
A State Home department official said on Saturday that after the BSF had deposited money for the purpose of flood lighting in the border, the cost was revised and the target for the completion of flood lighting the 443 km border has now been fixed for January, 2017.
Earlier, the BSF had deposited Rs 14 crore to Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL), but the latter failed to provide electricity to make the flood lights in the borders functional.
It was 10 years ago that the BSF had deposited the money with the State Government for flood lighting in the entire stretch of 443 km, sources said.
Pending flood lighting in the border, two generators were used by the BSF to provide light to some border outposts out of the total 117 operational BOPs.
However, generators cannot be used for the flood lights, as the power needed for flood lighting in the entire border in Meghalaya is 44300 KV.
The BSF currently has 45 numbers of 100 Kilovolt-ampere (KVA) generators and one generator set can cover around 10 km stretch of the border. The BSF has managed to light up only 93 km of the Meghalaya-Bangladesh international border.
