SHILLONG: The Khasi Jaintia Butchers’ Welfare Association (KJBWA) has urged the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills to investigate the new system of issuing challans specifically meant for butchers trading at Pynursla.
Vice President of the association, Generous Warlahpih, stated that the association had not issued any challan nor authorized any of its members to issue challans.
“We are surprised that the challan has the seal of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) but the serial numbers have been erased. The challan is meant only for butchers trading at Pynursla,” Warlahpih stated, while suspecting that it is a plan to resume smuggling cattle to Bangladesh.
He further alleged that some butchers from Pynursla buy 40-50 cattle each week but slaughter only 10, which is an indication that the cattle are being smuggled to Bangladesh.
