TURA: A man arrested in a case of cheating has reportedly fled from police custody in Mahendraganj police station on Tuesday afternoon while the family of the accused blamed police and alleged foul play.
South West Garo Hills police had arrested one Abdul Motled Miah, a resident of Nondichar, in a case of cheating and on Tuesday afternoon he was reportedly led out to the compound to relieve himself by two constables when he is said to have pushed them aside and fled.
Police said that the Circle Inspector of Mahendraganj PS conducted an inquiry and the report was submitted on Wednesday. The sentry has been suspended.
Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded a thorough probe into his disappearance on the grounds he was a party supporter.
The family of the accused alleged that he was roughed up by the police after his arrest, something strongly denied by the cops.
The state BJP leadership during their press briefing at Tura on Wednesday morning expressed concern over the disappearance of Miah and claimed that he was a party supporter who actively worked in the last GHADC elections in which BJP candidate Bhupender Hajong emerged victorious from Zikzak constituency.
However, police denied any untoward incidents taking place and maintain that the accused took advantage of the opening since the toilet inside the police lock up was not functioning.
