SHILLONG: The budget session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Wednesday witnessed a heated dispute between opposition members and the EM in charge Trade after the latter failed to provide a satisfactory reply to their queries.
James Ban Basaiawmoit posed a query to James Sylliang, EM in charge of Trade, on the number of trading license applied for with effect from 2014 till date, but Sylliang’s reply did not tally with the written reply prompting the opposition members to question him.
Cornered, the beleaguered EM said, “I will send a notice as to the number of applications.”
Prior to this, Sylliang was hard pressed by the opposition members, forcing the KHADC CEM to intervene and after spotting the error in the figures, he urged Sylliang to examine the matter carefully.
Basaiawmoit urged Sylliang not to provide trading licenses to non-tribals and asked him to write to the Hima Mylliem to stop issuing NOCs to non-tribals with regards to applications for fresh trading licenses at Iewduh which accounted to nine.
To a query by Basaiawmoit, Sylliang admitted that the NOCs are issued in consultation with the Trade and the Executive departments of the KHADC.
