SHILLONG: Opposition leader Donkupar Roy on Friday asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to practice what he lectured while summing up the debate on Governor’s address. Roy was drawing attention to the alleged discrimination against opposition members in allotment of funds and schemes.
After a lengthy reply by the Chief Minister on what the Government intends to do to empower the people, he wanted to know the mind of the mover of the amendment motion, Donkupar Roy.
The Opposition leader immediately got up and said that it was a good lecture but the Government should practice what it preached.
While referring to the statement of Nihim D. Shira (NPP), who said that Songsak constituency has the best road in the country, Roy said, “Songsak may have the best roads in the country but my area Shella has the worst roads.”
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, countered various allegations of the Opposition.  “The Government is always blamed for failures; the intent of the government is to deal with the challenges,” Sangma said adding that the government had strengthened the security apparatus of the State.
The Chief Minister, however, admitted that the State Government has failed on certain fronts as it “wasted time on non-issues”.
The Chief Minister, however, underlined that the State had come a long way despite revenue deficit and that the hosting of the 12th South Asian Games had set a new benchmark for Meghalaya.
Sangma, meanwhile, was clearly annoyed over statements that he was the “chairman of militant outfits”.
Talking about bad roads in parts of State, the Chief Minister said, “We will ensure to set up proper drainage so that continuous rain will not spoil the road. We have been investing on roads which do not last long. How can we sanction funds again and again?” the Chief Minister asked, while assuring the House that post drainage system will be put in place during the construction of roads.
With regard to the issue of connectivity when it comes to online scholarships, he said that a help desk will be set up in Shillong to enable the students to apply scholarships under SC/ST and minorities through online.  He said in due course of time, every part of the state will be connected digitally.
