SHILLONG: A week long programme on a Symposium-cum-Workshop on ‘Significance of Bamboo in Socio-Cultural and Economic Development of North East India’ and ‘Celebration of Bamboo Culture’ organised by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), New Delhi culminated at the North Eastern Hill University campus, Shillong on Wednesday.
The programme was part of the research activities and ongoing efforts by IGNCA for promotion, preservation, and dissemination of cultural heritage and knowledge system of the communities of North East India conducted through research and documentation. The symposium covered a wide range of topics ranging from folklore and ecology, rituals, practices, sustainable development, utility and importance of bamboo in the socio-cultural and economic development of the communities of North East India. Cultural performances, storytelling, film screening, ethnic cuisines, and exhibitions of basketry and bamboo craft were part of the celebration of Bamboo Culture.
The coordination of the programme was conducted by Richa Negi, coordinator of North East Programme, IGNCA, New Delhi in collaboration with Department of Cultural and Creative Studies, NEHU and Riti Academy of Visual Arts.
