SHILLONG: The Customs officers of Headquarters, Preventive Unit of Shillong intercepted a truck in Shillong Bye-Pass on the night of March 25 and seized 36,675 bottles of Phensedyl Cough Linctus, a codeine based cough formulation which has got huge demand in neighbouring Bangladesh where it is used as an intoxicant. The market value of the consignment is over Rs. 38 lakh.
D. Bhattacharjee, Superintendent (Headquarters Preventive) said in a statement on Sunday that the consignment of Phensedyl was cleverly concealed under 340 crates of oranges and grapes. The truck, bearing a registration number of Rajasthan was also seized.
The consignment of cough syrup had been loaded from Kolkata and was bound for Agartala. Two persons hailing from Rajasthan, including the owner of the truck have been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
