Accidents claimed 209 lives in State in 2015

SHILLONG: In an alarming revelation, 209 people have died in road accidents in Meghalaya in 2015, a clear indication that the number of fatal road accidents is on the rise in the State.
As per police statistics, on an average 30 accidents take place in the State each month with a total of 360 road accidents recorded in Meghalaya last year. 209 people died while 586 people sustained injuries in the accidents.
A curious observation is that the maximum number of fatal accidents in 2015 occurred between 3 PM and 6 PM with 42 deaths and 160 injuries recorded in 2015.
According to statistics, the highest number of road accidents last year occurred in East Khasi Hills (167 cases) followed by Ri Bhoi (81).
South Garo Hills recorded the least number of two road accidents while only accidents were reported from East Garo Hills last year.
