Guwahati: Over 82 per cent exercised their franchise in the second and final phase of Assam Assembly election that was marked by death of aged voters in a clash in a polling station on Monday. Poll official Lakshmanan informed that final polling percentage was likely to increase as final compilation were still on. The first phase polling held on April 4 last also recorded over 82 per cent polling.
Former Prime Minister and a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, Manmohan Singh today cast his vote in Guwahati at the Dispur Government High School polling station under Dispur LAC. “I think people of Assam will reward the Congress party for the good work it has done for the people of Assam in last 15 years,” said Singh, while walking up to the waiting media persons in the school campus.
Singh came amid tight security, after 1 pm to cast his vote. Both he and his wife Gursharan Kaur are voters in Dispur constituency though the latter did not turn up on Monday.
The former PM is enrolled in the electoral roll as voter No. 570 in the polling station where he voted today. He is a resident of House No. 3989 in Sorumataria area of Guwahati which is rented out to him by Late Hiteswar Saikia, a former CM of Assam.
Fate of total 525 candidates were sealed in EVMs in the final phase of polling held in 61 Assembly constituencies on Monday.
Total 1,04,35,277 voters including 53,91,204 males and 50,55,051 females were expected to exercise their franchise in total 12,699 polling stations to decide the fate of 477 male candidates and 48 female candidates. Total 50,796 polling officials will be engaged to conduct the polling under tight vigil.The Election commission has set up total 148 model polling stations across all the constituencies including highest number of 33 model polling stations in Nagaon districts.
