Lafarge Umiam award for environment protection

SHILONG: The Lafarge Umiam Mining Pvt Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bangladesh-based Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd, was adjudged as a model mine in terms of health and safety of workers, afforestation and land reclamation.
The company which is involved in mining of limestone at Nongtrai was awarded the Guru Dronacharya award during the just concluded 13th North East Metalliferous Mines Safety week held under the aegis of Directorate General of Mines Safety, Govt. of India in Shillong in recognition of the consistent outstanding achievements of the mines in the field of health and safety.
Besides it was also awarded with top prize for first aid, mines mate, blaster drill operator, dozer operator, tyre mechanic, general mechanic, dumper driver while excavator and auto electrician was adjudged with third prize.
The LUMPL limestone mines was also awarded with the first prize in the overall performance among the mines owned by various cement companies in the entire NE region at another function- the Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation Week held simultaneously under the aegis  of Indian Bureau of Mines, Guwahati sub-region.
Besides, it was also awarded with the top prize for afforestation/plantation, reclamation/rehabilitation of top soil, installation and use of mechanical beneficiations, air pollution control measures, sedimentation, noise-vibration survey and publicity and propaganda.
Leading companies in the region like Star Cement, Dalmia Cement, Topcem Cement, Green Valley cement, Hill Cement, Best Cement, MCCL, KLMC, NECM and others participated in the event.
At the MEMC week, Controller General of India Bureau of Mines Shri.R K Sinha, who was also the chief guest, highlighted the importance of responsible mining keeping in mind the environment and mineral conservation.
LUMPL operation director Narayan Sharma said his company is committed to sustainable development approach and environment protection to restore its quarries, develop bio-diversity and energy conservation.
