SHILLONG: Heavy thunder showers accompanied by a hailstorm hit Shillong and its surrounding areas on Saturday morning. The capital city wore a whitish look with pebble-sized hail on the roads and the lanes and on roof tops.
Several houses were damaged in and around Shillong when strong wind accompanied with rain and hailstones lashed the capital city.
According to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar, strong winds blew away rooftops of four houses at Barapathar, one house each at Mawlai Mawtawar, Ishyrwat and Kreit in the district.
Similarly, six families were also affected at Nongpathaw, Lawmei and Mawlong.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, there is no report of casualty or injury.
Similarly, district administration has also arranged relief materials for the affected people.
There was disruption of power supply in most parts of the city in the squall.
Rains lashed city at least in four intervals till Saturday evening. Several trees were uprooted by the storm which disrupted the movement of both vehicular traffic and the pedestrians.
Damage to several vehicles was also reported from Sohryngkham
Meanwhile, the Regional Metrological Centre, Guwahati in its forecast said that thunder squall with wind speed exceeding 60 kmph accompanied with hail is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur,  & Tripura on April 17. It also said that heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya on April 17 and 18; heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya on April 19 and 20.
