New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee will visit Manipur on Saturday to attend ‘Khongjom Day’ function, observed every year to pay tribute to the brave sons of the state who made supreme sacrifice for their motherland.
He will also inaugurate a monument-cum-tourist centre at Khongjom, a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement today said. Khongjom, which is under Thoubal district of the state, is about 36 kms from Imphal on the Indo-Myanmar road.
After landing at Imphal airport, the President will leave for Kodompokpi in Thoubal district in helicopter. He will inaugurate the monument to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Anglo-Manipur war of 1891 at Khongjom.
Security has been beefed up in the state in view of the President’s visit. A senior police officer told PTI that “verification processes” of individuals settled in areas near Kheba Ching and Khongjom have been undertaken. Frisking has also been intensified under the supervision of senior IPS officers.
The army and Assam Rifles are also coordinating with the state police so as to ensure no untoward incidents occur during the President’s visit, the officer said. (PTI)
