SHILLONG: The special cell of East Khasi Hills Police arrested three persons for extorting a group of students at Mawkdok and taking away their phones and DSLR camera.
Addressing media persons here on Friday, SP (City) Vivek Syiem said that the incident happened on September 9 last when the miscreants in a car with an obscure number plate at Duwan Singh Syiem bridge, Mawkdok demanded Rs 10000 from three students, Denzil Lyngdoh, Navjot Kaur Gill and Biryamjrit.
According to Syiem, the miscreants claimed to be members of an NGO and threatened the students that it was prohibited to take photographs of the surrounding hills and that they will have to pay the amount.
On being unable to pay the money, the miscreants took away their I Phone 6, I phone 5 S, Nokia Dual sim phone and DSLR B5 camera
The students filed the FIR and the case was taken up by the special cell of East Khasi Hills Police following which three persons, Jied Lang Sohtun, Vishal Sohtun and Javid Sohtun, all hailing from Shillong were arrested. The miscreants were produced before the court in Sohra and were remanded to five days police custody. Recently, on leading by the miscreants, police recovered the I Phone 6 and I phone 5 phones from a forest in Mawkdok.
Police also seized the car (ML 05E 2642) from Laban Last stop on Friday and one of the accused, Javid Sohtun, on Friday handed the camera to the police.
Vivek Syiem said that the incident sent a wrong signal to people who throng the area. Police have registered an extortion case against the miscreants.
